Neurofeedback for Trauma & PTSD in Edmond & Oklahoma City

Trauma doesn't just live in your memories. It lives in your nervous system: the hypervigilance, the startle response, the body that stays braced for danger years after the danger ended. Neurofeedback at Journey Counseling Center in Edmond and Oklahoma City trains those patterns directly, and because we're a trauma-focused counseling practice minutes from Oklahoma City, your brain training works alongside therapists who treat trauma every day.

How neurofeedback helps a trauma-wired brain

A brain that survived something hard learns to stay on guard. That over-arousal shows up in your brain's electrical activity, and it keeps running long after it stops being useful.

Neurofeedback trains your brain toward regulated patterns. Sensors read your brain activity while you watch a movie or relax, and the feedback rewards calm, present-moment states hundreds of times per session. Over weeks of training, your nervous system learns that it's allowed to stand down.

Training starts with a brain assessment: three appointments that measure your brain's activity and map your symptoms, so your protocol targets your patterns.

Brain training and trauma therapy, together

Here's what standalone brain-training centers can't offer: neurofeedback calms the nervous system, but processing trauma takes a therapist. At Journey, both can happen in one office.

Many clients find trauma therapy gets more productive once their baseline arousal comes down. Approaches like EMDR and brainspotting ask your nervous system to stay present with hard material, and a regulated brain can go further in those sessions. Your neurofeedback clinician, your therapist, and our psychiatric PA can all work from the same plan.

Frequently asked questions

Is neurofeedback evidence-based for PTSD?

The research is promising and growing, and neurofeedback has been used in military settings for exactly this purpose. It's strongest as part of a complete plan that includes trauma therapy, which is how we use it. We'll tell you honestly whether it fits your situation.

Do I have to talk about my trauma?

Neurofeedback training requires no retelling at all; you watch a movie while your brain does the work. If you also choose trauma therapy, you and your therapist set the pace, and approaches like brainspotting don't require detailed retelling either.

Can I do neurofeedback and EMDR at the same time?

Yes. They work on different levels: neurofeedback trains your baseline regulation while EMDR processes specific memories. Many clients find the combination more effective than either alone, and at Journey both can happen in the same office.
