Neurofeedback for Kids & Teens in Edmond & Oklahoma City
When your child is struggling, you want help that's gentle, safe, and actually works. Neurofeedback at Journey Counseling Center is a non-invasive way to train your child's brain toward better focus, calmer moods, and easier sleep, delivered inside a counseling practice with licensed child therapists on staff in the Oklahoma City area.
Is neurofeedback safe for kids?
Yes. Nothing goes into your child's brain. Sensors rest on the scalp and listen to the brain's natural electrical activity while your child watches a movie. When their brain produces calmer, more focused patterns, the feedback rewards it, and over repeated sessions their brain learns to find those states on its own. Most kids find sessions easy, and plenty find them fun.
What neurofeedback helps kids with
-
Focus and ADHD — the best-researched use of neurofeedback in children
-
Big emotions: meltdowns, a short fuse, feelings that outrun their words
-
Anxiety and worry that shows up as stomachaches, avoidance, or school refusal
-
Sleep that leaves the whole house exhausted
-
School performance, when a capable kid can't show what they know
What sessions look like for a child
Everything starts with a brain assessment: three appointments that measure your child's brain activity and map their symptoms, so their training targets their patterns. Then training begins, about 45 minutes, two to three times per week, watching a movie while the feedback runs. You stay involved at every step, and we track symptoms over time so progress is measured, not guessed at.
Why families choose Journey
Neurofeedback here isn't a standalone brain gym. Our practice includes child therapists, play therapy, parent-child work (PCIT), and teen therapy, plus a psychiatric PA for families weighing medication questions.
If the assessment tells us your child needs something other than neurofeedback, we'll say so and we'll have it within our own practice.

Frequently asked questions
How young is too young for neurofeedback?
There's no single cutoff. A good rule of thumb: if your child can sit through a short movie, they can likely do neurofeedback. The brain assessment answers this for your specific child, and we'll tell you honestly if they're not ready yet.
Does my child need a diagnosis first?
No. Many families come in with a diagnosis, and many come in with "something's going on and we don't know what." The assessment maps what's actually happening in your child's brain either way.
Will my child have to stop their medication?
No. Neurofeedback runs alongside medication safely. If training goes well and you want to revisit medication later, that conversation happens with a prescriber, and at Journey there's one in the same office.
