What to Expect at Your First Neurofeedback Brain Assessment

2 min read

Every neurofeedback program at Journey Counseling Center starts the same way: a brain assessment, spread across three one-hour appointments, usually completed within a week. Sensors measure your brain's electrical activity while we map your symptoms in detail. Nothing hurts, nothing goes into your brain, and by the end you'll see how your brain's patterns connect to what you've been struggling with.

What happens at the appointments?

You'll sit in a comfortable chair while sensors rest on your scalp. The sensors only listen; they record the electrical activity your brain produces naturally. While the equipment does its work, you mostly relax.

Alongside the brain measurement, we'll walk through your symptoms carefully, from focus and sleep to mood and stress. The point is to connect what shows up in your brain activity with what shows up in your life.

What you'll learn from it

The assessment shows which of your brain's patterns are working against you. An anxious, racing mind looks different from unfocused drift, and both look different from disrupted sleep. That matters because your neurofeedback training protocol is built directly from your results. You train the patterns your brain actually needs, at the pace your brain can handle.

We'll also tell you if the assessment suggests neurofeedback is the wrong tool for you. Sometimes the right recommendation is therapymedication support, or a combination, and we'd rather send you in the right direction than sell you sessions.

What happens after?

Once your protocol is set, training begins: sessions of about 45 minutes, usually two to three times per week. You'll watch a movie or relax while the feedback runs, and we track your symptoms over time so progress is measured, not guessed at.

Frequently asked questions

Does the assessment hurt?

No. The sensors record activity; they don't send anything into your brain. Most people find the appointments surprisingly relaxing, and kids generally handle them well.

How do I prepare?

We'll give you simple instructions when you book. Plan to arrive rested and give yourself the full hour without rushing to what's next.

How soon after the assessment does training start?

Usually within days. The three appointments are typically finished within a week, and your training protocol is built from the results right away.
