How to Choose CE That's Actually Worth Your Time

Hitting your CE requirement and getting something out of it aren't the same goal, even though they usually get treated like one. Here's how to tell the difference before you register for anything.

The hour count isn't the point

You already know your requirement, or you'll check it before you renew. What that number doesn't tell you is whether the hours you log change how you actually practice. It's entirely possible to hit your requirement every year and walk away having learned almost nothing new.

What separates useful CE from filler

  • The presenter still practices what they're teaching, not just researches it

  • The content gives you something to use in session next week, not just background knowledge

  • There's room for real cases and questions, not just a slide deck read aloud

  • The topic is something you've actually run into with clients, not just something that sounded interesting in a catalog

Ethics and supervision content deserves extra scrutiny

These categories get treated like a box to check, which is exactly backwards. Ethical judgment and good supervision are the parts of practice most likely to go stale without deliberate attention. A genuinely good ethics course changes how you think through a hard case. A bad one is an hour you'll forget by the time you leave the parking lot.

How we approach this at Journey

Every Journey CEU event is led by working therapists, LPC supervisors, or specialists — people still doing the work they're teaching, not just presenting on it. See what's on the calendar, or if you'd rather plan your whole year at once, look at the Self Actualization Plan.
