Choosing a Mental Performance Coach in Oklahoma City: What to Know

  • Jul 29

f you're searching for a sports psychology consultant or mental performance coach in Oklahoma City, you've probably noticed the options aren't always easy to compare. Titles vary, training backgrounds vary, and it's not always obvious what actually happens in a session. Here's what to look for, and what to expect.

Understand the Titles

"Sports psychologist" is a legally protected title that requires a psychology license — most providers doing this work in Oklahoma, including licensed counselors with specialized training, use titles like Mental Performance Specialist, Sport and Performance Consultant, or Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC) instead. A provider using one of these titles isn't offering a lesser service; the title simply reflects their specific licensure, not the depth of their training.

What matters more than the title is the training behind it. Ask directly:

  • What is their educational background in sport and performance psychology specifically?

  • Are they also a licensed mental health clinician, or purely a coach/consultant?

  • Do they have experience working with your athlete's age group and sport?

  • What does a typical session actually involve?

Coach, Consultant, or Clinician: Why It Matters

A sports performance coach typically focuses on physical technique. A mental performance consultant focuses on the mental skills of competition — focus, confidence, routines. A licensed clinician with mental performance training can do all of that and address what's underneath it when performance struggles connect to anxiety, perfectionism, burnout, or identity issues — which, for a lot of athletes, they do.

If your athlete's struggles are purely tactical, a coach may be the right fit. If nerves, confidence, burnout, or bigger emotional patterns are part of the picture, a provider with clinical training as well as performance expertise will generally get further.

What to Expect From a Session

At Journey Counseling Center, sports and performance sessions with Madeline Roseke, LPC, EdD, typically include:

  • An initial conversation about the athlete's sport, goals, and specific challenges

  • Mental skills training tailored to the athlete — routines, self-talk, focus strategies, breathing and arousal regulation

  • Clinical support when performance struggles connect to anxiety, self-esteem, or life transitions like injury recovery or stepping away from a sport

  • Practical strategies the athlete can use in practice and competition, not just in the session

Madeline holds a doctorate in sport and performance psychology and is a Licensed Professional Counselor, which means sessions can flex between performance-focused coaching and deeper clinical support as needed — without needing to find a second provider if something more comes up.
